Counting Money

This week in 2nd grade we are continuing to learn about money. We are learning to recognizing the coins and know their names and values.  We are learning to add them up and graph  with them.

For example:  What do 2 dimes, 1 nickel and 3 pennies cost?

Prior to this week we learned how to estimate the costs of various objects.
For example:  Would a pencil cost about 1 cent, 10 cents or 5 dollars?

  1. One way we are learning to count coins is by adding legs to our coins. A quarter gets 5 legs, a dime gets 2 legs, a nickel gets 1 leg, and after all the legs are added we count by 5's for each leg. The pennies are so little they just get dragged along at the end. See if you can add legs to this: 2 quarters, 1 dime, 2 nickels, and 1 penny.

  2. 2 Quarters, a dime, 2 nickels, and 1 penny make 71 cents.
We think Randy Walker wrote this comment because he likes to write a lot or Mrs. Winters wrote it because she leaves a comment every week or Mrs. Fink so she could tell us she wrote it, or Mr. B because he likes to comment on our posts.

We infer this comment was written by Randy Walker because he likes to comment and give us things to think about, or one of our second grade teachers because they know we are putting legs on money to add.

We think it was Mrs. Fink's class because they are learning about money too or it was Mrs. McLaughlin's class or Randy Walker because he writes LONG comments.
